AUTHOR NOTES: Nothing really. Just thinking out loud.

The elf and dwarf lay side by side on the grass, resting from their efforts and sharing a cask of wine and easy conversation.

"Tell me, laddie," said the dwarf, "were you ever lovers? I hope you don't mind me asking, but I always wondered."

The elf's blue eyes gleamed in the light of afternoon. "There was one time," he said, smiling as he began the story. Beside him, his friend breathed quietly, afraid to distract him.

"He said 'Legolas, I want you,' and I knew exactly what he meant."

It was like a summer storm breaking on the mountain -- full of electricity and rolling thunder -- sudden, fierce and wet."

We had survived the impossible. I watched him come within inches of death by the sword of that Troll, unable to get close enough to intervene. I could see he had accepted that death in those last seconds before the end came. And the end was not the finality of his own life, but the last of the war itself."

Suddenly the eye of Sauron imploded and the air itself started to swirl and roil. The ground around us shook and gave way!"

The Black Gates collapsed."

It was over. The Ring had been destroyed. And we had lived through it all!"

It was inevitable that we would then reach for each other, I suppose. The relief, the comfort, the celebration of being in one another's arms! I never questioned the look in his eyes, the demands of his hands and lips. I had never before been so moved, and I have never since."

I would have stayed beside him that way forever. But he never needed me again as he did then, and for him that one sudden squall of passion was enough to quell the need that had grown over those difficult months."

For me, my bond to him was sealed by those hours, and I knew I would be with him as long as he lived, if not in his bed, somewhere in his heart."

And now . . . " He trailed off, unsure of how much of the story he had actually spoken aloud.

"And now it's time to get back to work!" said the dwarf. "We've made good progress today, and by tomorrow our task will be complete, I think."

The elf nodded and stood, reaching out a hand to help the dwarf to his feet. "Yes. By tomorrow the ship will be finished. And then, my dear friend, we'll sail."

The End
